The first thing that everybody started saying after the Intel announcement, mainly, was that bad things would probably come to Costa Rica for the next years. Also that, another companies of this field would take the same decision, and the foreign investments here will be gone.

Then, one of my friends in facebook wrote in the wall that we shouldn´t "cry" or suppose that this only mean negative news for our contry, he also said that here we are persistent people and with the education that we have and the ideas growing in our heads, we are going to be able to succeed without the need of foreing companies that came to Costa Rica only to take advantage of cheap work force. It was not a surprise to my that a lot of people supported my friend and posted comments with the same point of view.

For me, both parts have part of the reason, because the layoffs ofcourse mean problems for 1500 families, and no all of them are going to find a job quickly, but for the other side, some of this people would get off the conffort zone that they were in, and probably with all the knowledge and the experience that they won trough their years working in that huge company, they would be able to start a new company, creat their own team of people working in technology and probably give jobs to other people.

This also apply for a lot of students that I know from universities, like the TEC for example, who had the goal, after graduated be part of Intel, and work for them because they are one of the biggest Technological companies in the world; but now all these students have to think in a different way to use their studies, and with luck this will end in the idea of create their own business and develop technology by ourself here in Costa Rica.

  2. The closure of the INTEL manufacturing and the Bank of America service center have a negative connotation in the our economy, because that rises the unemployment and unbalance the foreign investment. Also the Costa Rica's image in front the other countries is affected, due to INTEL is a symbol of our technology.

As well as, other companies which are in the same situation will be able to take this moment to leave Costa Rica, so our representative have to study a preventive plan to avoid the close of more factor in this year and promote the PYMES. In this way Costa Rica has good talent to begin new productive service and products, so it is important to recover our invest in different areas and look for opportunities to put own products abroad.

On the other hand, in mi opinion is good notice for the environment that INTEL close, the reason is this company polluted lots of our water, and the government didn't do anything to prohibit this attitude, also they didn't produce the amount workforce that they promise when staring work here in 1998, so we have to learn about this and implement new model to control the activity of other companies which want to invest in our country.

Although, we lost important markets and good business partners, Costa Rica have to show its capacity to face the adversity and continue expanding the talent that we have here, improve the education and motivate the global competition in the workers.

  3. This situations for me expose Costa Rica not in a good way, because this can affect other companies decisions about coming to Costa Rica, i algo thing the Costa Rica goverment could avoid this situations, because we all know that here companies have to pay a lot of money to the goverment in taxes and in social security to the workers.

And if this company go to other country they dont have to pay a lot of things to the goverment, they are not a charity they are business men, they give a great benefit to the country with all that jobs, so probably the goverment never try to talk to them about this things. So they just left.

Costa Rica is a capable country so this problem is not going to ruin every thing because we have very good people in this fields, i think that layoffs can be a opportunity to start a own business.

This situation affect our university in some aspects because is a university for engineers and when students came here most of them think they are going to be hire by intel.

Bank of America is letting go many people too, but we are not so familiar with this situations because this things happen in many countries, they let people go when the economy is not good.

Finally in my opinion we have people that is more than prepare an this will encourage other companies to come.

  4. The closure of Intel´s manufacturing facilities has been a rough blow to the Costa Rica´s people. The cutting of 1500 jobs and the closure of the door to future engineers are two great problems that the country has to face. First of all, the domino effect produced by closing Intel facilities forced the Bank of America to let go at least another thousand employees, so the amount of unemployed people is multiply. The negative implication to this is that people without jobs are people without income. The greater the amount of people without income the poorer the country becomes. The poorer the country is, the bigger the number of crimes. The bigger the number of crimes, the more insecure is the country. So by these references, we can notice that Intel’s move affects all of us, and not only the people working at the manufacturing facilities and the calls center of the Bank of America.

When the anger and the nuisance increase, people are used to blame the first coincidence that they can perceive. In this case, the election of the new president of Costa Rica collided with Intel´s announcement. So as usual, the first to blame was Luis Guillermo Solís. But, it just takes a few minutes of reading to find out the Intel´s decision was made way before the president was elected. Even the company told Mr. Solís that their decision had nothing to do with his election neither with the conditions in the national market.

A positive implication of this closure is that now the people of Costa Rica are required to take manners into their hands, and build up new companies that can cover, and hopefully improve, the electronics national market. Also new foreign companies will notice that this country has a lot of people in capacity to work for them, so we expect that new companies can bring their facilities to the country and offer even more jobs that those that were lost.

The future of many engineers in the country, and the national market around these fields is uncertain. The future of more than three thousand persons is not looking so bright. But, with the high quality education of this country and the capacities of this engineers is only a matter of time before new companies rise and start making this future looks a lot brighter.
